ISTA 3H Bulk Transport Containers

Testing Standard:

ISTA 3H Mechanically Handled Bulk Transport Containers or ISTA 3H Bulk

Standard Number
ISTA 3H

Standard Title
Products or Packaged-Products in Mechanically Handled Bulk Transport Containers

Overview for ISTA 3H Bulk:

ISTA 3H is a general simulation test for mechanically managed bulk loads of the same product or mixed loads. This procedure utilizes general simulation of actual transport hazards by full truckloads that include unitized loads made up of either single or multiple packaged products. Purple Diamond Testing offers ISTA 3H Testing as part of our packaging distribution testing services.

Rationale for ISTA 3H Bulk:

ISTA 3H Products or Packaged-Products in Mechanically Handled Bulk Transport Containers. This can be used to evaluate the protective performance of a mechanically handled transport container of the same product or mixed loads related to thermal conditions, shocks, compression, random vibration, and other stressors normally encountered during its distribution cycle. The procedure creates general simulation hazards in a regulated laboratory environment that is repeatable.

Here is a typical procedure for testing bulk transport containers:

1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the container for any damage or leaks. Verify all valves, gaskets, and seals are working correctly.

2. Pressure Test: Apply hydraulic pressure to the container, typically 1.5 times its maximum working pressure, and hold for 30 minutes. Record any pressure drop.

3. Leak Test: Conduct a leak test by applying soapy water or another suitable solution to the container’s external surfaces. If bubbles occur, the container has failed the test.

4. Drop Test: Drop the container from a specified height onto a concrete surface to simulate the container’s potential impact during transportation. Inspect for any leaks or structural damage.

5. Vibration Test: Place the container on a vibration table, and simulate transportation vibrations in all three axes. Inspect for any leaks or structural damage.

6. Internal Inspection: If the container is a tank, inspect the interior for any damage or corrosion. Conduct thickness testing to ensure the tank’s integrity.

7. Documentation: Document all tests, including the container’s make and model, serial number, and testing date and sign off by an accredited testing body.

It’s important to note that testing procedures may differ based on the type of material being transported and the regulations of the target country.

Accreditations

Achieving ISO 17025 Accreditation is the pinnacle in third-party laboratory testing accreditation. It confirms that the facility has management, quality, and technical systems in place to ensure accurate and reliable analyses.
ISTA is revered as the certification standard for package testing for distribution. ISTA’s Testing Protocol remains a series of testing methodologies and standards well recognized within the packaging community.
A select few companies are authorized by PHMSA as an approved third-party packaging testing laboratory in accordance with Hazardous Materials Regulations, critical to ensuring safe transport of dangerous goods.
