Product Testing
While all packaged products have a natural ability to withstand damage from their shipping conditions, product testing can help decide endurance and evaluate reliability. By correctly evaluating and product assessing your products’ fragility, the proper amount of packaging needed to guarantee safe arrival can be developed, saving product owners time, money, and materials. Effective product testing not only yields immediate cost savings, but detecting product weaknesses early on avoids the compounded consequences over time of delivering a substandard product plagued with product defects.
What Is Product Testing?
Product Testing is a fundamental step in product development to verify the safety and overall performance of any given product prior to entrance into the marketplace. Rigorous testing ensures that a product will be able to withstand not only the common stressors met with everyday use, but also resist the harsh conditions faced during distribution. Durability, a key indicator of performance and reliability, can be evaluated under simulated conditions such as extreme temperatures, humidity, altitude, thermal shock, mechanical shock, vibration, and more.
How We Evaluate and Test Your Product
Reliability Product Testing
Product reliability testing can help product owners ensure that product quality and durability remain consistent throughout the life cycle of the product, part, or material evaluated. When performing reliability testing, specific conditions are replicated to find defects, weaknesses, or failures. This type of testing and product evaluation assesses the product’s ability to perform as designed through the duration of the intended life cycle.
Mechanical Shock
- ASTM D3332 - Test Methods for Mechanical-Shock Fragility of Products, Using Shock Machines
- ASTM D5487 - Test Method for Simulated Drop of Loaded Containers by Shock Machines
Vibration
- ASTM D999 - Test Methods for Vibration Testing of Shipping Containers
- ASTM D3580 - Test Methods for Vibration (Vertical Linear Motion) Test of Products
- ASTM D4728 - Test Method for Random Vibration Testing of Shipping Containers
Polymer Product Testing
Polymer testing is used to evaluate the performance of plastic-based materials or products when faced with stressors and environmental challenges. Data gathered from this type of testing can help predict the product’s overall effectiveness, be used in product development to make improvements, and verify product safety and compliance. There are both a physical and mechanical aspects to evaluating the polymers. In most cases, doing so is a vital part in the actual development process, or the beginning stages. This first testing allows for the right factors to be chosen beforehand, including but not limited to, thermal, optical, mechanical and other behaviors. Climate testing allows the engineers to better understand the product and how well it can or cannot withstand its environment.
Polymer
- ASTM C297 - Test Methods for Flatwise Tensile Strength of Sandwich Constructions
- ASTM D638 - Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics
- ASTM D790 - Test Methods for Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials
Accelerated Aging
- ASTM G154 - Practice for Operating Fluorescent Ultraviolet (UV) Lamp Apparatus for Exposure of Nonmetallic Materials
- ASTM G155 - Practice for Operating Xenon Arc Lamp Apparatus for Exposure of Materials
Temperature and Humidity Product Testing
Temperature and humidity testing evaluates the effects of these conditions on products or materials. When subjected to harsh environments or extreme temperatures, the quality and reliability of the product can become compromised. Using environmental chambers, extreme temperature changes, pressure changes, and changes in humidity are replicated to record product performance and measure resistance. Some examples of products that can be evaluated using this temperature and humidity testing method, include but are not limited to electronics, plastics, and certain metal products. Humidity and elevated temperature will certainly play a part in whether a packaged product of these calibers will make it from Point A to Point B without any corrosion or damage in the exterior of the products. Any product failures will be analyzed after the test and re-designed or engineered accordingly.
