Overview for ISTA 1G Packaged Products:
ISTA 1G Packaged Products is a basic procedure of non-simulation integrity performance testing. This procedure could be used as a starting point for comparing various package design types.
ISTA 1G is a testing standard that is used to evaluate the performance of packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less. The test protocol involves subjecting the package to various transport stimuli that it is likely to encounter during normal shipping and handling. These stimuli include vibration, shock, compression, and atmospheric conditions such as temperature and humidity.
The purpose of ISTA 1G testing is to ensure that the packaging that a product is shipped in is able to protect the product from damage throughout its journey to its destination. By simulating the various stresses and strains that the packaging and the product will undergo, the testing helps to identify any weaknesses in the packaging design or construction.
The ISTA 1G testing standard includes two levels of intensity – ISTA 1G-Small Parcel and ISTA 1G-Standard. ISTA 1G-Small Parcel is designed for packages weighing 70 lb (32 kg) or less, while ISTA 1G-Standard is intended for packages weighing between 70 lb and 150 lb (32 kg and 68 kg).
Upon completion of the testing, the packaging is evaluated based on a set of criteria that includes the level of damage to the package, the integrity of the contents, and the ability of the package to protect the contents under the specified testing conditions. A passing score means that the packaging is able to withstand the stresses of shipping and handling and provide adequate protection to the product.

Rationale for ISTA 1G Packaged Products:
ISTA Procedure 1G Packaged Products 150 lbs. (68 kg) or Less (Random Vibration). Can be used to compare relative performance of package and product design variations using random vibration and shock tests (drop or incline impact). The procedure is used to create harsh worst-case hazards in a laboratory environment while comparing multiple design variation packaging systems.
Key Points:
- ISTA 1G evaluates the performance of a packaged-product
- ISTA 1G provides a guide to evaluate packaging systems in the laboratory environment
- If a partial-simulation test is to be utilized, see ISTA 1C
- Use ISTA 3A for packaged-products that may be transported in a small parcel delivery system
