Home Testing Standards ISTA ISTA 1D
ISTA 1D is an extended, non-simulation package integrity performance test for an individual packaged product weighing more than 150 pounds. Just like the other tests in the ISTA 1 Series, ISTA 1D is used to evaluate the performance of a packaged product, as well as to compare the performance of various packaging designs.
Purple Diamond Testing offers ISTA 1D Testing as part of our package distribution testing services. In our ISO-certified lab, we subject your package to a series of tests that replicate real-world distribution dangers, including shocks, vibration, and compression to ensure that your packaging is strong enough to provide adequate protection to the product during transportation and handling. If the test is done properly, it will increase customer satisfaction, balance out distribution costs, and decrease product loss.
ISTA 1D is used to ensure the integrity of an individually packaged product during distribution. In addition to compression, vibration, and shock testing, atmospheric preconditioning is also a requirement. The packaged product shall be preconditioned to laboratory ambient temperature and humidity for no less than twelve hours prior to testing.
After testing is completed, a report will be built from the specific data measured before, during, and after testing. ISTA Test Report Forms may be downloaded by members through the online ISTA Member Center. The packaged product is seen to have passed if, upon examination, it meets the predefined product damage tolerance and package degradation allowance.

"*" indicates required fields
Test Category | Test Type | Test Level | For ISTA Certification |
---|---|---|---|
Atmospheric Preconditioning | Temperature and Humidity | Ambient | Required |
Compression Conditioning | Machine or Static | Calculated Test Load or Force | Required |
Vibration | Fixed Displacement | 1 in (25 mm) peak to peak at a frequency to be determined | Required |
Random | Overall Grms level of 1.15 | - | |
Shock | Drop | Height varies with packaged-product weight | Required |
Incline Impact | Impact Velocity varies with packaged-product weight | - | |
Horizontal Impact | Impact Velocity varies with packaged-product weight | - | |
Shock | Rotational Edge Drop | 8 in (200 mm) | Required when not testing face 1 |
The test sequence includes atmospheric preconditioning, compression conditioning, vibration testing (fixed displacement or random), and shock testing (drop, incline impact, or horizontal impact). An additional rotational edge drop may also be required.
ISTA standards require a minimum of 1 sample to be tested. However, for final packaging design purposes, testing 5 or more samples is recommended.
Yes, for unitized loads of the same product (that are securely packaged, packed, or arranged together on a pallet or skid), ISTA 1E or ISTA 3E may be more appropriate.
ISTA 1D is designed for large, heavy individual packaged products weighing over 150 pounds (68 kg), such as industrial equipment, large appliances, or heavy machinery.
Both ISTA package testing methods are specific to packages weighing over 150 pounds. However, ISTA 1D uses more extended testing. This procedure includes compression testing and offers alternative vibration options (fixed displacement or random), while ISTA 1B only uses fixed displacement vibration and does not include compression testing.
