ISTA 1A

What is ISTA 1A Testing?

Integrity Testing for Packaged-Products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or Less

ISTA 1A testing is a basic, non-simulation integrity performance test. This package testing procedure is used as a starting point for comparing various package design types. This method was specifically designed to replicate the challenges that your products may face during the distribution process, such as compression, vibration, and impact, in order to determine whether the package and product can withstand transport hazards.

Purple Diamond offers ISTA 1A testing as part of our packaging distribution testing services. Our goal is to challenge the integrity of a package during transit by simulating the hazards it will experience during the shipping process. Tests in our ISO-certified lab include atmospheric preconditioning, vibration testing, and shock testing, including drops.

Rationale

ISTA 1A can be used to compare relative performance of package and product design variations. The procedure is used to create harsh worst-case hazards in a laboratory environment while comparing multiple design variation packaging systems. When the test is done properly, packages will endure shorter development times, optimized distribution costs, customer satisfaction, and so much more.

To ensure successful testing, it is important to define several objectives. First, manufacturers should determine what the allowable amount of distribution damage should be. For example, after testing, some packaged product samples may have slight dents on one or two sides. Is this damage acceptable, or will it result in recalls?

Horizontal Impact Impact Velocity varies with packaged-product weight -

Key Points

  • Evaluates the performance of a packaged-product
  • Provides a guide to evaluate packaging systems in the laboratory environment
  • Consider ISTA 1G to use random vibration in place of fixed displacement vibration
  • Considers the package and the product together
  • Can be used to compare relative product designs

FAQs

How many samples are required for ISTA 1A testing?

Only one sample is required for ISTA 1A testing. However, ISTA recommends performing the procedure five or more times using new samples for each test for a more accurate performance.

ISTA 1A is primarily for individually packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less. For packages over 150 lb, consider ISTA 1B or 1E.

While ISTA 1A is useful for general package testing, it’s recommended to consider ISTA 2A for products intended for international distribution.

  • Quicker time to  market & shortened package development time
  • Reduced damage and product loss
  • Optimized distribution costs
  • Fewer returns & increased customer satisfaction
