ISTA 1E

What is ISTA 1E Testing?

Testing for Unitized Loads of the Same Product

ISTA 1E testing is a basic, non-simulation package integrity test for unitized loads of the same product, placed on a pallet or skid and secured together for distribution. Products may include individual containers stretch-wrapped together; a single, non-packaged machine branded to a pallet, or a pallet with a corrugated tray, tube, and cap. The product and packaging are assessed as one unit.

During testing, the unitized load is subjected to vibration and shock tests to determine its ability to withstand different types of stress during transit. These tests are conducted in a controlled environment, using equipment like drop testers and vibration tables to replicate the various conditions the load may encounter. Following testing, the unitized load is inspected for any signs of damage, including cracking, tearing, or deformation, indicating whether the packaging is robust enough to protect the product from damage during distribution.

Rationale

ISTA 1E testing compares the relative performance of packaging and product designs using vibration and shock tests.  The testing procedure recreates harsh, worst-case hazards in a controlled laboratory environment. Results yield insights that help reduce packaging and product damage; optimize packaging designs; improve customer experience; and enhance cost savings.

FAQs

How many samples are needed for ISTA 1E testing?

Only one sample is needed to conduct ISTA 1E testing. However, it is recommended that the test be performed at least five times to ensure accuracy. A new sample is required each time the test is performed.

No, it does not account for specific hazards like moisture or pressure. For such scenarios, ISTA Series 2 or 3 tests should be considered.

Products that are placed on a pallet or skid are typically tested under ISTA 1E. These may include boxes or containers secured together using stretch wrap; large equipment or machinery that is banded to a pallet; or bulk shipments where the products are secured with lightweight packaging materials.

ISTA 1E is part of the 1 Series, which focuses on Non-Simulation Integrity Performance Tests. These tests evaluate the strength of unitized loads but do not simulate specific transportation environments or conditions. For tests that are more reflective of these conditions, ISTA 2 and ISTA 3 series tests are recommended.
