ISTA 1H

What is ISTA 1H Testing?

Random Vibration of Packaged-Products Over 150 lb (68 kg)
ISTA 1H testing is a basic, non-simulation package integrity test for packages weighing over 150 pounds. The purpose of this test is to determine whether the product’s packaging is capable of protecting its contents during transportation and handling. The test involves subjecting the package to different types of forces and conditions that it may encounter during distribution, including random vibration. Then, the package is observed for any signs of damage or deformation, and the contents are inspected to ensure they have remained intact.

Rationale

ISTA 1H compares the relative performance of package and product design variations using random vibration and shock tests (drop or incline impact). The procedure creates harsh, worst-case hazards in a laboratory environment.

The results of the test are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the packaging for the intended transportation method, whether by land, sea, or air. This data is then used to make any necessary improvements to the packaging for better product protection during shipment. Purple Diamond Testing offers ISTA 1H testing as part of our packaging distribution testing services.

Key Points

  • Evaluates the performance of a packaged-product
  • Provides a guide to evaluate packaging systems in the laboratory environment
  • Use ISTA 1E for testing unitized loads in a non-simulation environment
  • If a general-simulation test is to be utilized, see ISTA 3B or ISTA 3E

FAQs

What's the difference between ISTA 1H and ISTA 1B?

ISTA 1H uses random vibration testing, while ISTA 1B uses fixed displacement vibration. Random vibration testing is often considered more reflective of real-world transport scenarios.

  • Decreased product damage and fewer returns
  • Optimized packaging methods
  • Compliance with retailer and distributor package certification requirements

Only one sample is required for ISTA 1H testing. However, it is recommended to test at least 5 samples for more accurate results.

There are several other ISTA procedures you can turn to depending on the type of product and transportation method you will use. For packaged products requiring  compression testing, ISTA 1D is recommended. For international distribution, consider ISTA 2B. And for unitized loads, ISTA recommends ISTA 1E.
