TAPPI T460 – Air Resistance of Paper (Gurley Method). Data is obtained by measuring the time it takes for a certain volume of air to pass through the material. Some materials require a high air resistance which will allow the use of vacuum opening or lifting devices mainly used in manufacturing and packing of corrugated boxes. With the air resistance of paper influenced by the fiber type, length, hydration, orientation, compaction, and sizing, the data obtained from this test can verify the specification set by the manufacturer. Recycled paper generally has fibers that are ½ the length of virgin paper and therefore the porosity can be affected.
