ISTA 3L: Everything You Need to Know

ISTA, the International Safe Transit Association, has introduced a new test protocol in accordance with the ever-changing e-commerce market. ISTA 3L, a generalized e-commerce retailer fulfillment test, was introduced in April 2023 to help evaluate the performance of packaged products in retailer-controlled supply chains and help mitigate damages while packages are in transit to the consumer. Here’s what you need to know about this new testing protocol.

ISTA 3L: Key Features

The ISTA 3L Generalized E-commerce Retailer Fulfillment Test helps e-commerce retailers identify potential weaknesses in their fulfillment processes and packaging design. The test primarily focuses on products shipped in their own containers (SIOC) directly to the customer.

The test  incorporates elements from existing ISTA tests, such as ISTA 3A and 3B, while adding new testing protocols to address e-commerce-specific challenges.

During the test, packages are subjected to various environmental and handling stresses, such as vibration, impact, temperature, and compression. By simulating these hazards, ISTA 3L for e-commerce provides valuable information to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of e-commerce fulfillment operations, reduce damage to products during transit, and increase customer satisfaction.

How is ISTA 3L Different?

Unlike ISTA 3A and 3B, which focus on general parcel delivery and less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments, ISTA 3L is specifically designed for e-commerce retail fulfillment. As a result, it tests against new standards specifically related to e-commerce. For example, it tests packaged products against a variety of retailer outbound shipping methods and fulfillment center handling methods.

While similar to ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOC testing, ISTA 3L is not retailer-specific. Its testing protocol is  applicable across the e-commerce industry.

Its generalized, retail-agnostic approach and range of products, along with its expanded analysis of outbound shipping and fulfillment methods, makes this new standard a more modern testing protocol that embraces the challenges of e-commerce.
