ASTM D999 Test Methods for Vibration Testing of Shipping Containers
Test Methods for Vibration Testing of Shipping Containers
Overview for ASTM D999:
Rationale for ASTM D999:
Test Methods for Vibration Testing of Shipping Containers. Vibration is found in every type of transit channel. It can cause damage to all components of shipping containers, including the closure and most importantly, the product. This test method is used in ASTM D4169 and is imperative when confirming a design to ensure its ability to perform as intended.
It is important to know why testing vibration is so important. In today’s world, shipping containers are constantly exposed to stress caused by vibrations during their transit route. Some consequences of the vibrations can be extreme and ultimately lead to package and product failure, which is something we want to prevent. To lessen or completely take away the damage from vibration, the identification of critical frequencies and package stress is important.
Reports include the full description of the test samples, including the container, the packaging on the inside, the product, and any other materials, etc. The sequences of the samples and test methods with their corresponding test intensities, frequencies, and durations used for the test must be listed as well. Any atmospheric or environmental conditions must be listed as well. Ultimately whether the test passed or failed will be listed as well. Recommendations will be made to update the design if necessary to be able to eventually get the product out to market.
